Dakota State Comes Back to Defeat Northwest U
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Dakota State came back from a 31-24 halftime deficit to edge the NU Eagles, 62-59, today, in their final game of the Holiday Inn Classic in Sioux Center hosted by Dordt College.DSU outscored the Eagles 38-27 in the second half to take the victory and improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Eagles jumped out fast taking a 21-5 lead in the first quarter after a Miranda Langenhorst jumper which capped off a 7-0 NU run. By the end of the first quarter, NU held on to a 21-9 lead.
Emily Fiso's jumper with 4:51 left in the seond quarter would give the Eagles 13 point, 29-16 lead, but a 6-0 run by DSU would make it a 32-24 lead at halftime. NU's defense would hold Dakota State to 21 percent shooting and 0 for 6 from the 3-point line while the Eagles shot 36 percent for the half.
DSU would step up their game at the start of the second half and a 12-0 run to begin the period would give them a 36-32 lead. U would battle back to tie the game, but Sharee Galbraith's jumper with 11 seconds to go would give DSU a 47-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, two free throws by Emily Henderson would give NU a 57-53 lead with 3:53 to go in the game, another Galbraith jumper would tie the score at 57-all with 2:31 to g NU's Brianna Fiso would give the Eagles a 59-58 lead with 43 seconds to go, but DSU would hit 4 of 4 free throws down the stretch to pull out the narrow, 62-59 victory.
Northwest U's (2-3) Mariah Stacona led the Eagles with 12 points while Brianna Fiso recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard, Charmaine Bradford scored 8 points and had 4 assists for the Eagles who shot 32 percent for the game (17-54). NU out rebounded DSU 48-42. NU hit 10 of 14 free throws for 72 percent shooting from the foul line.
Dakota State was led by Sharee Galbraith's 19 points and 12 rebounds and Madison Walford's 13 points. DSU also shot 32 percent for the game, but were 25 of 29 from the free throw line for 86 percent.
NU head coach, Ken Crawford commented, "It was another great effort by our team today. This has been a great trip for us in terms of learning how to play basketball at a different level and find who we are as a team. We are looking forward to returning home and hitting the court again!"
NU will play their annual alumni game on November 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Pavilion.
