Evergreen Slips Past Lions to Win 82-76

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University women’s basketball team had another thrilling Cascade Collegiate Conference game, falling to The Evergreen State College 82-76 on Friday night on Jim Skagen Court.
 
In a game that totaled 20 three-pointers, MU finished the night with 13 but couldn’t find a way to hold on to the lead, dropping their record to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference. Evergreen gets their first win of the season as they improve to 1-3, 1-1 CCC.
 
MU’s Sadie Jenks finished with a career high 18-points, hitting 6-of-11 from behind the arc to keep her team alive, while Valerie Wakefield added 3-of-4 from deep, totaling 14 points.
 
The Lion’s held their largest lead of the opening quarter at 19-14 with 1:59 left on the clock before heading into the second quarter of play with the score 21-19 in favor of MU.
 
Jonelle Staveland ended the evening with a game high 22-points which included six three-pointers while Uriah Thomas and Gabi Fenumaia added 13 and 10 points respectively.
 
The Geoducks took their first lead since the 4:46 mark of the first quarter after a layup by Thomas made it 25-24 just over three minutes into the second. The rest of the quarter went to Evergreen as they reached an 11-point lead before heading into halftime with a 45-37 advantage.
 
Evergreen took their largest lead of the night with just under a minute to go in the third quarter after two free throws by Irene Moore gave them a 15-point lead, 60-45.
 
MU’s Lacie Kamper finished just short of her third double-double, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds while Miranda Schmillen added 11 points of her own.
 
The Lions began the final quarter of play on a 20-10 run to bring the game to within one point, 70-69. For every three that MU found, the Geoducks found a way to respond as they closed out the final quarter winning 82-76.
