LOGGERS HAND EVERGREEN 70-56 DEFEAT
Box Score
Alexis Noren scored 19 points and Emily Sheldon added 16 as the Puget Sound Loggers came into Costantino Recreation Center on Wednesday night and defeated The Evergreen State College, 70-56, in a non-conference women's basketball game.
Evergreen (1-6) got 22 points from Uriah Thomas and 20 more from Gabi Fenumiai but couldn't overcome 34 percent shooting and 29 turnovers that led to 27 Puget Sound points.
The Loggers (6-3), who advanced to the NCAA Division III national tournament a season ago, shot only 39 percent from the floor but got a particularly strong effort from Noren, who in addition to her 17 points grabbed nine rebounds, dished out four assists and came up with two blocks and six steals. Noren was 8-for-12 from the field and hit all three of her free throw attempts.
Puget Sound scored 15 of the first 17 points in the second half to extend a nine-point halftime lead to 22 points at 45-23. Just when it seemed like the visitors would continue to pull away, Thomas scored seven consecutive points to get the Geoducks within 15, and they eventually pulled to within 10 points, 53-43, entering the final quarter.
When Lacey Morris scored on a fastbreak layup 35 seconds into the fourth period the Geoducks had pulled to within eight points, but two free throws by Sheldon and a dagger three-pointer by Samone Jackson gave the Loggers a 13-point advantage, and they stayed in front by double digits the remainder of the game.
All 10 Evergreen players saw action in the game but only five scored points. Thomas and Fenumiai both had double-doubles, Thomas leading all players with 13 rebounds and Fenumiai grabbing 11. The Geoducks dominated the board, 49-33.
Evergreen returns to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when it plays Pacific Lutheran in Parkland.
