Mansanerez Helps Yotes Split Season Opening Twinbill
CARSON, Calif. – Cole Mansanerez went 4-for-6 with an RBI, helping the College of Idaho to a doubleheader split with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the season opening games for both teams at Toro Field.
Playing two 7-inning doubleheaders, the Yotes (1-1) used a 3-run sixth inning rally to earn a 5-3 Game 1 victory, but Brady Conlan salvaged a split with a walk-off RBI single to give CSUDH the Game 2, 3-2, win.
In Game 1, the Toros (1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, as Conlan roped a 2-run single to right field. After Sam Grise got a run back for C of I in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, Kevin Lenik led off the bottom of the frame with a long home run to right field.
The Yotes countered in the sixth, as Mansanerez got C of I within a run with a one-out double, followed by a game-tying Jake Hennessey single. Following a ground out, Matt Hamilton lined a go-ahead RBI single to right to give C of I a 4-3 lead.
An inning later, the Coyotes got a huge insurance run as Johnny Hyland led off with a single, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. It would loom large, as CSUDH loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Brady Winfield got Joe Colick to fly out to right to close out the win.
Kyle Garvin picked up the win, working around 10 hits in six-plus innings of work, striking out five. Mansanerez was 3-for-3 with a run scored and Hyland added two hits in his collegiate debut.
Brandon Polizzi was 3-for-4, with Conlan and Spencer Maxey adding two hits in the loss for the Toros.
In Game 2, the Yotes jumped out quickly, as Seth Champlin led off with a double, scoring on a Garvin RBI single to left. C of made it 2-0 the third, as Brady Mooney walked, moved to second on a sacrifice hit, stole third, and scored on a Chase Miller RBI ground out.
CSUDH plated an unearned run in the third, as Albert Flores reached on an error, scoring on a Polizzi RBI single.
Markus Lively would limit the Toros to just five hits without a walk, striking out four, in six innings of work for C of I. However, in the seventh, Maxey led off with a double of Yotes' reliever Jordan Grubbs, advancing to third on a bunt and scoring the tying run on a wild pitch. Walks to Polizzi and Colick set up Conlan, who lined a base hit into right to end the game.
Fernando Gallegos went the distance for CSUDH to pick up the win, allowing just four hits and striking out nine. Maxey had the lone multi-hit game for either team, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow morning with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. (PT)
