Saints Take Two from Eagles in Scrimmage
LACEY, Wash. – The NU Eagles played under sunny skies again this weekend, but fell short as they dropped two games to St. Martin’s, 4-3 and 9-1, this afternoon. It was a scrimmage for the Eagles against the NCAA Division II Saints, so the games don’t count against their season record.
Game 1 – The Saints scored in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. SMU got one in the first, two runs in the second and added a fourth run in the bottom of the third inning to lead 4-0.
NU made a big comeback in the top of the 4th when they loaded the bases. Alyssa Gonzalez was hit by a pitch leading off and Darian Godfrey followed with a base on balls. With two outs, Cara Cristion was hit by a pitch loading up the bases. Bethany Bay stepped up with a clutch double to right field driving in all three runners, clearing the bases and cutting the Saints’ lead to just one, 4-3.
Defense and pitching then took over allowing just three hits between the two teams the rest of the way. Katelyn Riedinger singled with two outs in the top of the 7th, but NU would not be able to score.
Kelli Peckham went 7 innings and gave up just 8 hits and allowing four runs. The Eagles played solid defense with no errors for the game.
Game 2 – St. Martin’s got on the board early coming up with a run in the first inning on a double. The Eagles came back in the second as Katelin Lewis singled and eventually scored on a SMU error. The Saints would then explode for five runs in the bottom of the third inning on five hits and taking a 6-1 lead. They would put the game away in the sixth inning with three runs and four hits including three doubles as the game would end with SMU on top 9-1.
St. Martin’s scored their nine runs on 14 hits off Eagle pitchers Kierston Perry and Hannah Yelas. Northwest U came up with eight hits with Katelin Lewis going 2 for 2 and Ricki Tacdol 2 for 3 to lead the way for the Eagles. Savannah Rush was 1 for 1 pinch hitting and Alyssa Gonzalez returned to the line-up going 1 for 3.
Said NU head coach, Mallory Tacdol, “We weren’t making adjustments at the plate today and started putting pressure on ourselves. We weren’t keeping our goals in mind today, but we'll improve as the season progresses.”
NU will now prepare for their conference opener on March 13 when they play their first home game of the season at Everest Park against Southern Oregon.
