LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team was swept by Corban University on Saturday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field. The Warriors took game one, 10-1, and game two, 10-2.
Game One
In the top of the first inning, Danielle Ackerman drew a walk to get the Warriors' offense going. With Ackerman on first, Anne Binshcus doubled down the right field line moving Ackerman to third base. Ackerman came around to score on a Kyrianna Sorensen single, putting the Warriors ahead 1-0.
EOU answered right back in the bottom of the first inning. With one out,
Samantha Scott singled to center field. She scored on a double to right center by
Cassie Wendt, tying the game at 1-1.
After a scoreless second inning, the Warriors bats came to life in the top of the third. With two runners on base, Kylie Durre doubled to centerfield scoring one and putting Corban on top 2-1. After the first out of the inning was retired, Jamie Costa singled up the middle scoring two, extending Corban's lead to 4-1. The Warriors added one more in the inning. Going to the bottom of the third, EOU trailed 5-1.
With one out in the bottom of third, Scott singled through the left side of the infield.
Marisa Gonzalez drew a walk and with two outs, EOU had two runners on. However, they could not get anything across the plate and trailed 5-1 after 3 innings.
Neither team could get anything going in the fourth inning as both teams went quietly. The Warriors' bats came to life in the fifth inning. Corban scored five runs, on six hits, to grow their lead to 10-1. Binshcus hit a three run double for the Warriors in the frame.
EOU could not get anything going in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Wendt singled with the left side but was stranded on base and EOU dropped game one, 10-1, in five innings.
Game Two
Corban's offense came to life early in the second game of the doubleheader. Annie Owens doubled on the first pitch of the game to get the Warriors started. Ackerman followed with a walk to put two runners on base. Owen stole third base and Ackerman advanced to second on a Binschus ground out to the pitcher.
Sorensen put the Warriors on the board first with a single down the right field line that scored one. She then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. Durre drove both in with a double to right center, putting the Warriors ahead, 3-0. The next two Warrior batters reached base to load the bases. Corban scored one more in the inning and after the top of the first, EOU trailed 4-0.
After a quiet first inning for EOU, Corban's bats remained hot in the top of the second inning. With two runners on, and two outs, the Warriors would not go away quietly. After RaeAnna Dorcas reached on an error, which scored one, McCayla Hoffman hit a three run home run putting Corban on top 8-0 after the second inning.
The Mountaineers broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. With one out and
Gracie Flyg on first,
CeCe Pratt singled to center field and Flyg advanced to third.
Maryssa Santi followed with a single up the middle scoring Flyg and EOU trailed 8-1.
McKenna Michelsen followed with a single to third to load the bases for EOU. However, Eastern Oregon hit into a double play to end the inning.
The game remained 8-1 going to the top of the fourth inning. Binschus doubled to right field to start the inning off for Corban. Sorensen followed with a home run to center field extending the lead to 10-1.
EOU could not get anything going in the bottom of the inning and heading into the top of the fifth, EOU trailed, 10-1. In the top of the fifth inning, EOU was able to keep the bats quiet for Corban and kept them off the scoreboard, giving themselves a chance in the bottom of the inning.
After a scoreless top of the fifth inning for the Warriors, the Mountaineers came to bat.
Haley Hess singled to the pitcher to start the fifth inning for EOU. Hess advanced to second on a ground out. After a Mountaineer strike out, EOU had two outs and
Marisa Gonzalez heading to the plate. Gonzalez singled to right field, scoring Hess, but that would be all EOU would get. EOU would drop game two, 10-2.
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday, March 17 when they host College of Idaho at 3 p.m. PT. Corban returns to action on Tuesday when they host Northwest Christian at 2 p.m. PT.
