Yotes Season Ends at the Hands of Dakota Wesleyan 3/15/2015 9:20:52 AM POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – (Box Score) – No. 5 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) earned its first ever trip into the national semifinals with an 88-80 victory over No. 4 College of Idaho in the quarterfinals played today at the 2015 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship. This year’s event is being played at the Keeter Gymnasium. Balance was one of the keys for the Tigers as they had five players score in double figures, led by Trae Bergh with a game-high 19 points. Both Jalen Voss and Luke Bamberg scored 17 with Bamberg pulling down 12 rebounds for the double-double. Dakota Wesleyan overcame a tough perimeter shooting night, going 4-for-23 (17%) from beyond the arc, with a significant advantage at the free throw line, making 34-of-44 attempts compared to 13-of-17 for College if Idaho. A three-pointer by Yotes’ guard Marko Kovacevic capped a 14-3 run that gave College of Idaho its largest lead, 19-7, with 13 minutes left in the opening half. Back came Dakota Wesleyan behind the play of both Miller and Voss who scored nine and five points, respectively, during an 18-4 surge that brought the Tigers in front, 30-27, with four minutes left in the half. DWU maintained its three-point lead at the break. Dakota Wesleyan came out firing at the start of the second half and after a jumper by Bamberg, opened up its largest lead, 58-45, with 13 minutes left. The Tigers stayed in front by 6-10 points for most the final half but College of Idaho made one last push, getting to within three (79-76) on the first of two free throws by Josh Wilson with under a minute to go. The Tigers, however, secured their spot in Monday’s semifinal, going 8-for-10 from the foul line over the final 40 seconds to get the win. Dakota Wesleyan shot an even 50% for the game and held a 39-32 edge on the boards. Kris Menning netted 14 and Miller scored 13 points coming off the bench. College of Idaho was led by Kovacevic with 15 points, followed by Wilson with 14 and Demetrius Perkins with 13. Perkins, a senior from Compton, Calif., scored his 1,000th career point with his first basket of the game. The Yotes’ end the year with a 30-6 record. Dakota Wesleyan continues to add to its season record win total, improving to 31-4 on the year. They will play the winner of top-ranked Indiana Wesleyan vs No. 8 Davenport (Mich.) in the first semifinal game on Monday night.
