Raider DMR places second, Maguin fifth in NAIA Indoor finals 3/7/2015 5:37:00 PM SOU Sports Information GENEVA, Ohio – The Southern Oregon University men's distance medley relay team placed second and Amelia Maguin (Fernley, Nev./Fernley) was fifth in the women's 400-meter dash finals Saturday as the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships came to a close at the SPIRE Institute. The Raider DMR squad – which had won the last two indoor titles but lost two runners from that record-setting team – was 0.62 seconds short of a third straight championship, finishing as runner-up to Concordia (Ore.) with a time of 9:54.37. Zach Boyd-Helm (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) ran the 1,200-meter portion, JJ Latu (Hawthorne, Calif./Ladybird Johnson) took the 400, Kevin Jorgensen (Yreka, Calif./Yreka) legged out the 800 and Jared Hixon (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale) was the anchor with the final mile. The DMR final was essentially a two-team race, with third-place Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) more than nine seconds behind SOU's quartet. SOU qualified with the sixth-best time in Thursday's preliminaries – an atypical 10:06.13 that could be attributed to a minor injury and a drop of the baton. The Raiders set the NAIA record in last year's final by clocking in at 9:47.60. Boyd-Helm and Jorgensen had run the same legs on SOU's last two championship teams. Hixon – who's also been an All-American in the outdoor 1,500 and at the NAIA Cross Country Championships in the last 10 months – was new to the event, as was Latu, who serves as a return specialist and running back on SOU's football team. Concordia's team was anchored by Matthew Clowes, who was named the outstanding performer by earning more team points than any other individual at the meet. Maguin – a two-time 400-meter hurdle national runner-up – became a 400 All-American for the first time and ran a personal-best 55.94. Wayland Baptist's Bianca Farrington won with a time of 54.60. Oklahoma Baptist won the women's team championship and Indiana Tech won the men's title.
