Cavs, Eagles split Tuesday twinbill
HAPPY VALLEY, Ore.—Moving locations hours before the start due to rain in the region, Concordia University and Northwest University split a midweek softball doubleheader at Hood View Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Concordia (32-12, 13-5 CCC) grabbed the opening game 5-3 before Northwest (9-19, 5-15 CCC) used a five-run second inning to even the series with a 9-3 in the finale.
Concordia will remain home this weekend to host College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon on April 10-11 at Delta Park.
Game 1: Concordia 5, Northwest 3
Getting three runs in the first, Concordia never trailed en route to a 5-3 win in the opener against Northwest.
The Cavaliers maintained a 5-0 lead through five innings before the Eagles plated a single run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk from Aylssa Gonzalez. Concordia starter
Lucy Baldovino (18-3) prevented further damage with an inning-ending strikeout, one of her 10 in the game.
The Eagles managed to put the tying run on deck in the seventh following a 2-run home run by Katelyn Reidinger, before Baldovino once again ended the frame with a strikeout.
Kate Santos drove in two of Concordia's three runs in the first inning, doubling to right-center to score
Meghan Luebbert and
Taylor Bussey.
Taylor Copher closed out the opening inning with an RBI single through the left side.
Jamie Martin delivered the final offense for the Cavs, belting a 2-run homer to left with
Kadi Patterson on board.
Game 2: Northwest 9, Concordia 3
Falling behind 2-1, Northwest sent all nine batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring five runs to take a lead it would not surrender. The first two NU batters were retired with infield grounders but evaded the third out with a single by Katelin Lewis followed by three straight walks for the first score in the stanza.
Katelyn Riedinger and Savannah Rush continued the attack with back-to-back singles through the middle for two RBI apiece.
The Cavs got one run back with a solo shot to left field by
Taylor Bussey but were done in by inning-ending double plays in the third and the fifth.
Northwest's Kierston Perry picked up the win in a complete game performance, improving to 4-7 on the season. Perry allowed six hits and walked three while holding the Cavs to less than half of its season scoring average.
