CALDWELL, Idaho - College of Idaho head coach Scott Garson has announced that he will serve as an assistant coach for the Under 18 United States team at the 2015 European Maccabi Games, held in Berlin, Germany.

The Maccabi Games are an international Jewish sporting event, much similar to the Olympics with opening and closing ceremonies. The Games take place every four years in Israel (next in 2017), while the European & PanAm Maccabi games are played every four years in between the Maccabi Games. The 13th Maccabi Games were held in 2011 in Vienna, Austria. The 2011 event was the largest gathering of Jews in that city since the Holocaust.

The fact that the 2015 games are being held in Germany will have many political and social media effects as it will be the first Jewish event of this of magnitude since the Holocaust ended 70 years ago.

"I am very excited to be a part of the Maccabi games and help represent the United States," Garson said. "This will be a particularly special event considering the Jewish history in Germany. Our delegation will not only partake in a highly competitive basketball tournament, but we will also receive a wonderful educational experience that will impact everyone deeply."

Training camp for the games will begin in New York on July 21 with the first contest against Turkey taking place on July 29. The USA team will then play Great Britain on the 30th, Canada on the 31st, and host-country Germany on August 2. Pool play will wrap up on August 3rd against Israel. The bronze medal and gold medal games are slated for August 4th.

"Coaching a team in international play is something I have always wanted to do. We plan to compete for the medal round and hopefully demonstrate the great brand of basketball that is played within the United States," Garson added.

Garson will enter his third season as the head coach of the Coyote men's basketball program where he has compiled a record of 58-12, including back-to-back regular and post season conference championships and a perfect record of 40-0 on games played within the state of Idaho.
