BELMONT, Calif. – If Wednesday's 10-1 win of a program debut at Sierra Nevada wasn't worthy of being a litmus test for the Southern Oregon University men's soccer team, Thursday afternoon's 3-1 triumph against Menlo College was at least a little closer.

SOU scored the last three goals of the game – two by Brendan Allen and one by Diego Buenrostro, who were not among the seven Raiders who scored Wednesday – to surprise Menlo (1-1), which last season was a 10-win team and went 9-3 in the California Pacific Conference. The game was played on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur University.

A crisper performance was demanded of the Raiders on their second day of existence. In contrast with the Sierra Nevada match, during which they got off 57 total shots, the Oaks limited the Raiders to six shots and just three on goal, but they converted every one of them.

Allen, a freshman from Roseville, Calif., made it 1-1 in the 27th minute with an unassisted goal. SOU finally took the lead in the 65th minute on Buenrostro's goal assisted by Kirk Bassett, and Allen provided the exclamation point less than four minutes later on a score that was assisted by Seigo Hall.

Robert Cowan hit Luiz Lodino for Menlo's lone goal 22:16 into the match.

Tyler Luebbert was SOU's keeper for the duration of the match and made eight saves. Menlo fired off 14 total shots.

The Raiders will return to California next week for matches at William Jessup and Pacific Union Sept. 4 and 5. Then it's on to Cascade Conference play, which begins Sept. 11 at College of Idaho and Sept. 13 at Rocky Mountain.

SOU makes its home debut Sept. 18 against Walla Walla (Wash.).
