No. 8 Vanguard Edges Eagles
COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 8 Vanguard Juan Arellano scored in the 83
rd minute to edge Northwest University, 1-0, in a non-conference game this afternoon in the VU Soccer Complex.
Northwest U’s (0-2-0) Daniel Christenson was solid in goal for the Eagles making 9 saves for the day, but it was Arellano who beat Christenson at the 82:31 mark, scoring into an empty net. Vanguard’s offensive push put pressure on Northwest U the entire game finishing with 28 shots.
Jesus Fregoso led Vanguard (2-0-0) with 7 shots, two shots on goal while Luke Kadillak had 6 shots, three on goal.
Sophomore Chris Iacolucci led the Eagles with 2 shots, one shot on goal. Daniel Christenson took the loss in goal for Northwest U while Brandon Gomez earned the shutout as the Lion’s keeper.
Said NU head coach, Gary McIntosh after the game, "I'm really proud of our guys for battling the entire game today. We came out and played with the 8th ranked team in the nation the whole game. Daniel (Christenson) was great in goal coming up with key saves and keeping us in the game.Our defense did an outstanding job limiting them to low percentage chances. Very pleased with our effort today."
Northwest U returns to Kirkland and will travel to Spokane, Wash., next weekend for two non-league games with Pacific and Whitworth University from the NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference.
