MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – Northwest University’s Kieran Raney score the golden goal with two seconds left in the first overtime as the Eagles edged Linfield College, 2-1, in a non-league contest this afternoon.

Raney headed in the game winner off a cross from teammate Max Schellmann who was just outside the 18 yard mark. Raney’s goal came right after a corner kick taken by Eagle Ryan Gamache.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half tie, but it was not without its moments. NU and Linfield exchanged shots early and Odason Pelogi’s shot 9 minutes in forced LC goalkeeper Jorge Rodriguez to make a save. NU keeper, Daniel Christenson made 4 of his 6 saves in the first half as Linfield took 8 of their 14 shots in the first period. Linfield had two shots in the final two minutes of the half, but one shot was blocked and the other saved by Christenson.

Kyle Zimmerman gave Northwest U (2-3) the 1-0 lead in the 47th minute on a penalty kick, his fourth goal of the season. Linfield pressed hard and tied the score at the 68:21 mark when Dylan Leathers scored the equalizer taking a pass from Alexander Gosselin. Zimmerman almost got the game winner in the 87th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar.

Linfield (4-2) held the edge on shots, 15-11, while Northwest U had 8 corner kicks to Linfield’s 7. Daniel Christenson earns the win in goal for NU making six saves while Jorge Rodriguez took the loss with two save in goal for Linfield. Zimmerman led NU with six shots, two shots on goal. Moi Davis had four shots, two on goal for the Wildcats.

“I’m very proud of the team today!” said Gary McIntosh, NU head coach. “It was a total team effort and the energy and work rate of everyone was spot on today. We created a lot of opportunities throughout the game but were unfortunate to find the back of the net. Defensively, we limited their chances and did not give up many opportunities. Daniel (Christenson) continues to be great in goal. Odason (Pelogi) did a good job in the second half and earned the PK. The effort to get the game winner was excellent and well-deserved. The guys never quit!”

The Eagles will open conference play on Friday, September 18, in Portland, Ore., when they face Warner Pacific.
