After succumbing to a rally by The Evergreen State College in the first set, the visiting Northwest University Eagles roared back to take the next three sets on the way to a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball win on Tuesday night at CRC Gymnasium.

The Eagles dominated at the net with 18 blocks in taking the 24-26, 25-14, 25-7, 25-16 victory. They improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Geoducks are now 2-8 overall and 2-3 in the CCC.

Trailing 7-4 in the opening set, Northwest rolled off 10 straight points, including three consecutive service aces by Sarah Warner, to take a 14-7 advantage over the Geoducks. The Eagles still led by six points at 19-13 when the Geoducks started their comeback with a four-point run, highlighted by kills from Matisse Davis and Kaela Carnes.

Evergreen continued to chip away at the lead but still faced two set points when Northwest grabbed a 24-22 lead on setter Morgan Pilon's kill. The Geoducks responded by scoring the final four points of the set with Natalie Taylor book-ending the run with kills.

The host's rally for the win seemed to awaken the Eagles, who after that were impossible to stop, particularly at the net where their front line took control. In each of the final three sets the Eagles had five team blocks after getting three in the opening set, to finish the match with an incredible 18 blocks.

In the second set they broke away from a 3-3 tie with five consecutive points, and back-to-back kills by Sydney Schlect helped them grab an 18-6 lead. Their largest margin in the set came at 22-8 before they closed out the 11-point win.

The third set started with 11 consecutive Eagles points, 10 from Emmaline Stockton's serve. Hannah Hanson and Pilon combined for three blocks during the run which featured just one kill by the Eagles. After that quick start the Eagles never led by less than 10 points the remainder of the set. Northwest hit .444 in the set compared to negative .296 for Evergreen, that due in large part to the blocking.

In the final set the teams were tied at 6-6 when the Eagles used their front line defense to again take control. Three consecutive times Taylor found her attack stuffed by Mattie Jo Johnson and Pilon, and that led to a 10-6 lead for the visitors. Evergreen managed to get within two points at 12-10 on a kill by Kylie Kytan, but again Northwest pulled away for the set and match victory. The Eagles finished at .400 for the set and .228 for the match compared to .007 hitting for the Geoducks during the match.

The Eagles got 11 kills from Amanda Waterman, 35 assists from Pilon and 18 digs from Stockton, but it was the blocking numbers that stood out. Johnson ended with 10 block assists, Hanson had one solo block and eight block assists, and Pilon ended up with seven block assists, to lead the way.

For Evergreen, both Jorden Porter and Taylor had 12 kills, while Kelsey Delagrange led with 30 assists and 12 digs.

Evergreen returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when its plays College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho.
