Student Athlete Advisory Committee Holds Retreat
LA GRANDE, Ore. - Student athletes representing the CCC's eleven full member schools converged on Vancouver, WA. September 13th to take part in the annual Cascade Collegiate Conference Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) retreat the conference office announced.
The student representatives, who were selected by the Athletic Directors on their campus, heard presentations from various speakers concerning leadership, the NAIA myplaybook and received an update about CCC happenings. In addition, the SAAC was able to join the member schools athletic directors for dinner and discuss conference topics.
"It is always great when we can engage with our student athletes," stated CCC Commissioner Robert Cashell. "The process provides a renewed focus on why we are involved in intercollegiate athletics which is to serve and support them.”
Maui Borden, a former Division I football player and motivational speaker discussed the” Seven Habits of a Leader.” Borden works for Proactive Coaching which is owned by Bruce Brown, a former NAIA coach and Administrator and creator of the NAIA Champions of Character program.
Kristin Gillette, Director of the NAIA Champions of Character Initiative led the SAAC through the Live5 and myplaybook components and discussed the new Drug Education program approved by the NAIA Council of President’s at last convention.
In addition to the presentations the SAAC conducted their annual business meeting and selected Co-Chairs for the 2015-16 year. Corban’s Jade Lowery and Evergreen’s Anthony Johnson were chosen to lead the group.
The CCC- SAAC serves the following functions:
- Discuss and provide feedback on conference issues affecting student-athlete welfare
- Assist in educating student athletes about CCC/NAIA issues on their home campus
- Increase and improve student-athletes' understanding of the CCC and NAIA Legislative process
- Promote student-athlete participation in department wide Champions of Character programs
- Provide a forum for addressing student-athlete concerns
