Corban Beats Evergreen in Entertaining Match 9/25/2015 10:06:22 PM The talented and youthful The Evergreen State Geoducks volleyball team (2-11 overall, 2-5 CCC) came up short in a very entertaining four-set Cascade Collegiate Conference match against the Corban Warriors (6-7 overall, 4-3 CCC) on Friday night in front of 117 fans at Costantino Recreation Center. In a match where six of the Geoducks who saw action on the court were a sophomores or younger, the set scores were 27-25, 25-27, 25-17 and 25-22. Evergreen was led by a career-high 21 kills from the birthday girl Natalie Taylor, who added 11 digs. Junior Jordan Porter contributed 15 kills, while the team's lone senior, Kelsey Delegrange, had nine kills and 11 digs to go along with her 47 assists. Sophomore Amber Parker, who tops the conference in kills per set, led the way for the Warriors with a game high 27 kills, 11 digs, and two aces. Freshman Setter Madison McLain delivered 52 assists to spark Corban. Also contributing for the Warriors were freshman Victoria Schroeder with 18 kills and a .444 attack percentage, and sophomore Haley Wells with a match-high 25 digs. The first two sets were extremely tight as indicated by the final scores. The Warriors led by as many as five points, 15-10, with Schroeder highlighting a 5-0 scoring run. The Geoduck gradually whittled away at the deficit and tied the score at 19-19 on Taylor's kill, and they came back from a 24-22 deficit to tie it at 24-24 on kills by Matisse Davis and Porter, who had seven of her kills in the set. After the teams traded points on kills by Schroeder and Porter, Corban finally closed out the match on back-to-back kills by Sloane Morrison and Parker. Evergreen had an early 6-2 lead in the second set with Taylor contributing a pair of kills, but Corban came back to tie it at 9-9 before moving ahead 16-13 on a kill by Hannah Olson. The Geoducks replied with four straight points to take a one-point advantage, and after that there were six ties and four lead changes as the teams battled on even terms. With the score knotted at 25-25, the Geoducks closed out the set on kills by Taylor and Davis. The Warriors trailed 16-16 in the third set when a Schroeder kill earned the tying point and gave them the serve. McKenzie Kolomyjec served five straight points to give Corban a 21-16 lead, and they eventually closed it out on Parker's eighth kill of the set. Parker played a big role in the final set with eight more kills, while Schroeder added five for the visitors. Evergreen took an early 5-1 lead only to see Corban run off 10 of the next 12 points to go ahead 11-7. The Warriors never did trail after that, though the Geoducks pulled within one point at 18-17 on a kill by Delagrange. That was as close as it got, however, and Corban ended the set and match for their fourth straight victory. The Warriors hit .277 as a team while the Geoducks finished with a .224 attack percentage. Evergreen returns to action Saturday night as they take on the Northwest Christian University Beacons. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Costantino Recreation Center.
