The Evergreen State College couldn't overcome an early deficit as Northwest University defeated the Geoducks, 3-1, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer match played Saturday afternoon at Geoduck Pitch.

The Eagles improve to 3-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference while the Geoducks are now 1-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the CCC.

Northwest gained control by scoring their two first-half goals within about 2 ½ minutes of each other. The first came at 17:58 from Madison Portune, who worked free on the back post. She took Tiffany Taylor's pass across the front of the box and knocked it in past Evergreen goalkeeper Kayla Baskett, who was left with little chance.

The second goal came from Gabriela De Andrade on a penalty kick at 20:35 after a Northwest player was taken down in the box.

Through the first half the Eagles owned a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 3-1 margin in corner kicks.

Evergreen's best scoring chance came late in the opening half when Stephanie Yoder's shot headed for the far net was knocked away by Northwest keeper Lauren Patefield.

The Eagles, who missed a penalty kick early in the second half, made it 3-0 at 66:35 when Kylie Garrison followed up her own header off the cross bar, tapping the ball into the open goal. Kortney Hudak was credited with the assist after crossing the ball in from the left wing.

The Geoducks got their lone tally at 83:28 on a penalty kick by Haleigh Ryneski, who netted her first goal of the season. Prior to that they had a great chance but Vanessa Zamora's goal-bound drive was tipped over the bar by Patefield, who finished the match with four saves.

After struggling to get into offensive gear throughout the first half the Geoducks saw more of the ball in the closing 45 minutes, getting off seven shots to six for the visitors. The final shot tally saw Northwest with 20 and Evergreen with 11. Corner kicks went to Northwest by a 6-3 count.

Baskett and Alison Mackey split time in goal for Evergreen, Baskett getting five saves and Mackey finishing with three.

The Geoducks are back in action at 4 p.m. next Thursday when they host Trinity Lutheran in a non-conference match.
