Katie Bennett scored the only goal of the match in the sixth minute as the visiting Great Falls Argonauts defeated The Evergreen State College, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match played Saturday afternoon at Geoduck Pitch.

With the victory the Argonauts improve to 1-0-1 this season, while the Geoducks are now 0-2-0.

Evergreen had the first clear chance at goal when, in the opening minutes, the Great Falls defense cleared Ellie Engel's goal-bound shot with goalkeeper Kyra Dorvall off of her line.

About 3 1/2 minutes into the match, Kaylee Bartley nearly scored for Great Falls, only to see her drive rebound off of the cross bar. Bennett made the next scoring opportunity count, netting the lone goal with 39:28 showing on the clock in the first half. Evergreen keeper Kayla Baskett got her fingertips to the20-yard shot but couldn't keep it from skimming just under the cross bar and into the net.

The Argonauts had the run of play through the opening 45 minutes, taking nine shots to just three for the Geoducks, but the final 45 minutes was much more evenly played. Evergreen's best second half scoring chance came with about 18 minutes to play when Dorvall held on to Haleigh Ryneski's long-range bullet that would have tied the match.

Great Falls finished with a 14-6 advantage in shots and both teams ended up with three corner kicks. Baskett recorded two saves and her defense also cleared two other Great Falls shots off the line. Dorvall had a pair of saves in addition to her defense stopping Engel's early attempt at goal.

The Geoducks return to action on Monday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Monmouth, Ore., to take on Western Oregon in another non-conference contest.
