Evergreen Sees Late Lead Slip Away
Kristen Frey scored all eight of her points in the final 4:10 of the game Tuesday night to help the visiting Northwest University Eagles garner a 69-63 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over The Evergreen State College at CRC Gymnasium.
The Eagles (8-11 overall, 4-6 CCC) trailed by six points when Frey hit the first of her two three-point baskets to help her team rally past the Geoducks (2-13, 2-8).
Northwest scored the game's first eight points and held the lead through the first three quarters, including a 12-point margin early in the second period, before the Geoducks earned their first lead in the first 90 seconds of the fourth period on a basket and two free throws by Uriah Thomas.
The Geoducks eventually built a 57-51 lead on a Thomas jumper with 4:37 to play. That was Evergreen's largest lead of the game, and it marked Northwest's turnaround, led by Frey. She hit a three-pointer and followed that with a banked jumper from the middle of the lane with 3:46 to make it a one-point Evergreen lead. About one minute later, Frey assisted on Miranda Langenhorst's layup to put the Eagles on top, 60-59.
Gabi Fenumiai scored a layup to put the Geoducks back in front by a point, Frey answered with her second three-pointer from deep in the left corner, and Thomas responded with a layup at the other end to make it a 63-63 score with 1:19 on the clock.
Northwest took the lead with 56 remaining on a pair of Langenhorst free throws, and Jordan Asher followed with a steal and layup to give the Eagles a 67-63 advantage with 49 seconds to play. Evergreen missed to shots and, after a Langenhorst rebound, Asher knocked down a pair of foul shots with 26 to go for the final score.
Asher scored 15 points and Langenhorst added 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Eagles, who shot 47 percent (27-for-58) from the field.
Thomas and Fenumiai recorded double-doubles for the Geoducks, Thomas finishing with 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Fenumiai ended the game with 15 points and 12 boards. Lacey Morris led both teams in assists with six.
After making just nine of their first 20 free throws, the Geoducks finished by making their last 12 for 66 percent accuracy. They shot just 36 percent (19-for-53) from the field and committed 23 turnovers, nine of those in the first quarter.
Evergreen closes out a four-game home stand at 1 p.m. Sunday when it hosts Walla Walla University.
