Thomas Breaks Pentathlon Record in 2016 Indoor Debut
NAMPA, Idaho -
Tiana Thomas broke a 6-year-old College of Idaho school record in the pentathlon, punching her ticket to the NAIA Indoor National Championships on Day 1 of the Ed Jacoby Invitational at the Jackson's Indoor Track.
Day 1 Results
The senior used a school-record high jump and a convincing win in the 800-meters to record 3,295 points on the day, surpassing Emily McCutcheon's previous mark of 3,290 points in 2010. Thomas easily met the NAIA "A" standard for the second straight year in the event.
After a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (9.24), Thomas tied a personal best with a high jump of 1.59 meters (5 feet, 2 1/2 inches) - setting the indoor record in the event. She recorded an 8.94 meter shot put (29 feet, 4 inches) and a 4.45 meter long jump (14 feet, 7 1/4 inches), before winning the 800-meters by over two seconds (2:19.12).
A third C of I record fell on the day, as sophomore
Hayley Morse broke the weight throw mark, unleashing a throw of 12.26 meters (40 feet, 2 inches), nearly a meter longer than the previous record. Teammate
Claire Otero nearly hit the mark as well, recording a top distance of 10.94 meters (35 feet, 10 inches).
Both Morse and Otero will be in action tomorrow on Day 2 of the meet, competing in the shot put.
