Third Quarter Surge Powers Oregon Tech by Evergreen State
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A 13-2 run to open the second half gave Oregon Tech a 45-19 cushion on the way to a 78-45 victory over Evergreen State College in Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball action tonight at Danny Miles Court.
Oregon Tech moved to 15-5 on the year and 9-2 in CCC action. Evergreen fell to 3-14 overall and 3-9 in CCC play.
Tied 5-all a 6-0 run by the Owls led to an 11-5 lead. Oregon Tech, with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter, used a 7-0 spurt, including a triple from Nohea Waiwaiole to close out the scoring, increased their advantage to 20-9 heading into the second quarter.
Evergreen State College managed to cut their deficit to nine, 26-17, on a Uriah Thomas jumper, but that was as close as the Geoducks would get for the remainder of the game.
A Megan Whetstone free throw, an Ashleigh Vandenbrink trey and a Carly McIsaac layup was enough to give the Owls a 32-17 lead at the break.
Oregon Tech used a 13-2 run, including eight points by Karly LeVeque in the stretch, to lead by 26 points, 46-19. The Owls extended their lead in the third quarter by as many as 33 points before heading to the final stanza up 59-28.
The Owls outscored the Geoducks 19-17 in the final quarter to earn the 78-45 win.
Karly LeVeque led a trio of Owls in double figures with a game-high 17 points to go with four steals and a pair of assists. Ashleigh Vandenbrink connected on 4-of-6 from long range to post 16 points, followed by Nohea Waiwaiole with 10 points in the win. Mary Drzayich added nine points and Carly McIsaac eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
Gabi Fenumiai led the Geoducks with 13 points while Autumn Moorcroft finished the night with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Uriah Thomas chipped in 10 points and Victoria Elleby six in the loss.
Oregon Tech will host Northwest University tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m., while Evergreen State makes the trek to Ashland to take on Southern Oregon University.
