Geoducks Shut Down Visiting Walla Walla
OLYMPIA – Miguel Viramontes scored a pair of goals and The Evergreen State College enjoyed a 36-6 advantage in shots in defeating the Walla Walla Wolves, 4-0, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer match played Sunday afternoon at Geoduck Pitch.
The Geoducks (4-0-2 overall, 3-0-2 CCC) put 20 of their 36 shots on frame, forcing 16 saves – including a penalty kick stop – from Walla Walla keeper Josh Fry.
The Wolves (0-6-0, 0-6-0) took the first shot 49 seconds into the game, but within a minute the Geoducks were on the attack at the other end of the field, and it pretty much stayed that way for the 90-minute duration.
Evergreen opened its ledger at 5:25 when defender Jordan Zimmerman, up for a corner kick, rose to head home a short cross from older brother Jake Zimmerman. The goal was the third of the season for the Geoducks sophomore.
The Geoducks made it 2-0 at 26:15 when senior forward Charlie Kramer took a pass from Jordan Zimmerman in the middle of the box, took a touch and calmly slotted the ball past Fry for his third of the campaign.
With a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 20-4 advantage in shots entering the second half, the Geoducks added their final two goals inside the first 14 minutes of the final period. Viramontes got both of them, taking a pass from freshman defender Tino Pantaleon and hitting a one-touch right-footed looper over Fry and into the goal at 48:46, and then shooting from the top of the box and into the left side of the goal at 58:37.
The tallies were the second and third of the season for the freshman midfielder, tying him with Jordan Zimmerman and Kramer for the team lead in that category.
Keeper Ben Stevenson notched his first shutout of the season for Evergreen and was never troubled as none of the Wolves' six shots were on frame.
The Geoducks' dominance allowed head coach John Purtteman to play everyone on his bench. In fact, Viramontes did not play in the first half, came on at the intermission, and was pulled out after getting his two goals in 14 minutes.
Evergreen returns to conference action next weekend, traveling to play Southern Oregon at 4 p.m. Friday and Oregon Tech at 2 p.m. Saturday.
