LA GRANDE, Ore. – The 17th-ranked EOU women’s basketball team outscored Whitworth, 41-24, in the third and fourth quarters, and the Mountaineers reaped 51 bench points on the way to sailing to a 72-47 triumph over the Pirates in their home opener on Tuesday night.
Three players tallied double figures off the bench, including senior forward Ashley Knight (15), junior guard Alisha Sorensen (13), and junior forward Stormee Van Belle (11).
Junior guard Maya Ah You posted 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting, and she also pulled down seven boards, as did junior guard Reece Bauer.
The Mountaineers simply dominated the glass, owning a 44-28 margin, and the Blue and Gold logged 19 assists en route to shooting 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field.
After Whitworth (1-2) jumped to an early 7-2 advantage, EOU netted 13 of the next 16 to go up by five (15-10) after a jumper by junior guard Payton Parrish. The Pirates responded with a 7-1 run to take a one-point (17-16) edge, but EOU fired right back with a 15-6 run to close the second quarter, as Sorensen buried a three-pointer to cap the rally.
The third stanza saw the Blue and Gold open with six straight points, including two inside buckets by Knight. The Mountaineers led by as many as 18 (46-28) in the frame before Whitworth strung together a 15-8 run to make it an 11-point (54-43) game with 5:57 left in the final quarter.
A dramatic and-one by senior guard Darian Gasseling sparked a 10-0 burst to pull away, and EOU ultimately celebrated a 25-point triumph.
