Eagles Face a High Scoring Ottawa Team in NAIA Tourney

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Coach Bryan Chud and the Eagles departed Kirkland last Friday for Orange Beach and a spot in the sweet sixteen of the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championships. This is NU’s first trip to the final site of the nationals after defeating No. 6 seeded Biola, 2-0, in La Mirada, Calif., on Sat., Nov. 19 in the opening round.
The Eagles will play a high scoring team in Ottawa University from Ottawa, Kansas on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. EST (2 p.m. PST). The Braves come into the game as the co-champions of the KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference), their ninth, and finished the league season with a 10-1 record, 19-3 overall. The Braves scored 19 goals in their final 4 regular season games and then defeated No. 18 Kansas Wesleyan, 5-1, in the KCAC championship game. They defeated No. 15 Hastings College in the opening round of the NAIA tournament with a come from behind 2-1 overtime victory. OU is coached by Marc Gordon who is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Braves. This is OU’s fifth trip to the NAIA national tournament and forward Caroline Jenkins from Golden, Colo., is a scoring machine in the Braves offense having scored an impressive 30 goals this season along with 13 assists. The OU high scoring offense has scored 76 goals as a team this season.
This will be the first trip to the NAIA national tournament for the NU team after they earned an at-large bid after finishing second in the Cascade Conference post season tournament championships and made their way to the finals by upsetting No. 4 seed, Eastern Oregon and No. 2 seed Southern Oregon before losing to Carroll College in the title game. The Eagles have played solid defense this past season posting nine shutouts while the offense has shown balanced scoring led by freshman Jubilee Zevenbergen’s 9 goals and 4 assists tying her for second in the CCC. Sophomore Whitney Weaver has 6 goals and one assist and senior Tatyana Reveles has knocked in 4 goals with two assists. Eleven other Eagles have scored goals which total 38 for the team total. Senior keeper, Lauren Hellum, finished fourth in the conference in goals allowed with a .75 GA average and has a .833 save percentage.
