2016 CCC Men’s Soccer Tournament Begins Today with Quarterfinals
LA GRANDE, Ore. – The quarterfinal rounds of the 2016 Cascade Collegiate Conference Men’s Soccer Championship, presented by U.S. Bank, are set to begin tonight at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Game One: No. 1 Rocky Mountain vs. No. 8 Oregon Tech – 5 p.m.
Oregon Tech enters the CCC Championships as the eighth seed, taking on top seeded Rocky Mountain in one of the opening games of the tournament. The Owls tied for the fifth most goals in the regular season with 39, giving up 19 goals to their opponents. Oregon Tech registered eight shutouts on the year, tying for the most with two other schools.
Named regular season co-champions, Rocky Mountain averaged the second most shots in the CCC during the season with 20 shots per game. The Battlin’ Bears scored 44 goals while the CCC Defensive Player of the Year, Eddie Cass, bolstered a defense that allowed the fourth least amount of goals overall.
Rocky Mountain registered a 3-0 win over Oregon Tech during the last week of the regular season.
Game Two: No. 2 Corban vs. No. 7 Northwest – 5 p.m.
Despite firing the third most shots in the conference, Northwest ranked seventh in the CCC in goals scored during the season with 36. The Eagles allowed the eighth most goals while ranking third in total saves with 102.
Led by the Offensive Player of the Year in Timur Zhividze, Corban claimed a share of the regular season title and finished with second in goals scored with 50. Corban’s defense also tied for the most shutouts with eight, thanks to goalie Jordan Farr who finished with 72 saves and seven clean sheets.
The Warriors earned a 2-1 regular season win over Northwest in the final weekend of play.
Game Three: No. 3 Evergreen State vs. No. 6 Great Falls – 8 p.m.
After making it to the championship game last year, Great Falls enters the tournament as the sixth seed. The Argos finished the regular season with 39 goals, scoring just under 2.5 goals per game.
Evergreen State’s defense succeeded throughout the year, allowing only 13 goals all season with five shutouts. On offense, the Geoducks lagged behind, totaling 28 goals which ranks 10
th in the CCC.
Evergreen tallied four goals in their 4-2 win over the Argos earlier this season.
Game Four: No. 4 Southern Oregon vs. No. 5 Carroll – 8 p.m.
Carroll gave up the fifth most goals during the regular season with 26, ranking eighth in saves with 65. The Saints’ offense put up 35 goals, averaging just under two per contest
In their second year as a program, Southern Oregon earned their first ever appearance in the CCC postseason tournament. The Raiders tallied the fourth most goals at 42, averaging over 14 shots per game. SOU’s defense also performed, tying for first in goals allowed with 13 and in shutouts with eight.
In the first meeting between these two teams, the Raiders managed a 3-1 win over Carroll on the road.
The winners of each quarterfinal matchup will advance to the tournament semifinals on Saturday with the highest seed playing the lowest seed.
