KANSAS CITY, Mo. – SCAD Savannah (Ga.) has taken over the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll for the first time this season. The Bees gathered all first-place votes and earned 498 total points in the latest edition, the national office announced Friday. This is the final poll of the fall season. The next Coaches’ Poll will be released Friday, March 10.
Top 25 highlights (historical information dates back to 1999):
• After a 2016 national championship second-place finish, the Bees of SCAD Savannah (Ga.) have made their way to the No. 1 ranking in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. This is the first time the Bees have held the top spot since the 2014 season. SCAD Savannah snatched all first-place votes to earn the ranking.
• Oklahoma City, which started the season ranked No. 4, crawled its way forward to take the No. 2 spot in this edition. In their last meet, the Stars placed first-out-of-eleven teams in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. The Stars earned a seventh-place finish in last season’s national championship.
• The rest of the top five includes No. 3 Dalton State (Ga.), No. 4 and defending national champions Keiser (Fla.), and No. 5 Cumberlands (Ky.).
• Two new squads are seeing time in the rankings as Southeastern (Fla.) and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) both come in at No. 22 this week.
• Just as many teams exited the poll this edition, with Wayland Baptist (Texas) and Cumberland (Tenn.) both falling out of the Top 25 to receiving votes.
• The positive movement this week is highlighted by No. 16 Thomas (Ga.) and No. 17 Oregon Tech, which both moved four spots north. Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) slid five spots up to No. 10, and No. 6 USC Beaufort (S.C.) and No. 7 British Columbia improved by four places.
• Twelve programs made negative improvements on the rankings, but still stayed in the Top 25 this week.
• Thirteen of the 21 conference/unaffiliated groups are represented in this edition.
• The Sun Conference leads the way with five squads representing it, including the No. 1 team. The Southern States Athletic Conference brings in four teams, while the Mid-States Conference welcomed three.
• Only three teams have gone the entire season ranked No. 1 – British Columbia (2001) Oklahoma City (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008) and Northwood (Fla.) (2015).
Poll Methodology:
• The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions.
• The Top 25 is determined by a points system based on how each voter ranks the best teams. A team receives 30 points for each first-place vote, 29 for second-place and so on through the list.
• The highest and lowest ranking for each team (a non-rating is considered a low ratings) is removed and the team’s ranking will be recalculated with an additional point added to each team for every ballot (including discounted ballots) that the teams appears on.
• Teams that receive only one point in the ballot are not considered “receiving votes”
• The frequency of polls occur bi-weekly for the 2016-17 season.
