Raiders renew Western Oregon rivalry with blowout win

MONMOUTH – Southern Oregon's win streak was never in danger Monday night in a 72-50 win at Western Oregon, an old rival that got a rude reintroduction to the fifth-ranked Raiders after a 10-year break in the relationship.

SOU (9-1 overall) wreaked havoc from the opening tip for its ninth win in a row. The Wolves (4-4), an NCAA Division II member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, were dealt their most lopsided loss, their lowest point total and their highest turnover total (26).

Autumn Durand put together another double-double, her sixth of the season, with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sydney Mullings went 5-for-8 with 14 points, six rebounds and five of SOU's 14 steals, and Majerle Reeves scored 12 points by making four 3-pointers for the third time in SOU's last four games.

Including exhibitions, the game was the 12th straight away from home for the Raiders, who were named the Cascade Conference Team of the Week on Sunday after CCC-opening wins at Corban and Northwest Christian. They'll debut at home Saturday and Sunday in 1 p.m. CCC tilts against The Evergreen State and Northwest (Wash.).

Aside from the opening basket, they never trailed against the Wolves. It was 16-10 after the first quarter, in which the Raiders scored eight points off turnovers. After giving up a bucket to start the second, they went on an 11-0 run as Durand, Reeves and Tiani Bradford each hit 3-pointers and WOU went seven minutes without a basket, eventually trailing 31-22 at halftime. And, in the third, SOU went on another 11-0 run capped by another Reeves 3-pointer and won the period 22-11.

The Raiders shot 42 percent (25-of-59) with eight triples and made 14 of 15 at the free-throw line – where they're shooting 86 percent (68-of-79) over their last six games.

WOU shot 36 percent (18-of-50) and its leading scorer, Shelby Snook, went 1-for-7.

Tiani Bradford had nine points and six rebounds, Toria Bradford had eight points and two steals, and Demi Sahlinger added four assists and three steals for the Raiders.
