Late Second Half Surge Lifts Seattle U Over Eagles

SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle University overcame a halftime deficit with a big second half to defeat Northwest University, 82.65, in an exhibition game at Key Arena. SU outscored the Eagles 50-29 in the second half for the come from behind victory.
 
Northwest U came out hot shooting 69 per cent to lead 21-10 in the first 12 minutes of the game. Tre’ Benton got NU going 3 for 3 from the field for 8 points to lead the way. The Eagles continued their hot hand and built their largest lead of the half, 31-17 with 5:41 on the clock. Dak Shagren added 7 points to help the NU cause while their defense limited SU to 32 per cent shooting. 7-3 post, Aaron Menzies, kept the Redhawks in the game with his 13 first half points and 8 rebounds. SU would go on a 15-5 run at the end of the half to cut the NU lead to 36-32 as the buzzer sounded.
 
Michael Dupree’s driving lay-up at the 17:56 mark would give NU a 45-38 lead, but a 3-pointer by SU’s Morgan Means would give the Redhawks a 46-45 lead with 16:34 left. Northwest U would regain their momentum and the lead and Paul Loranger’s 15 foot jumper from the foul line would give NU a 7 point 60-53 lead. The Eagles good shooting would cool down and Seattle U would outscore NU 13-10 to regain the lead at 73-63 with 1:52 to go in the game. NU would be unable to recover as the Division I Redhawks would score the final 7 points of the game for their home opening win.
 
Dak Shagren and Michael Dupree led Northwest U (10-0) with 16 points apiece. Dupree added 8 assists while Shagren and Dupree both hit 50 per cent of their shots. Tre’ Benton finished with 10 points and Ben Tucakovic pulled down 10 rebounds to go with his 8 points for the game. The Eagles shot 48 per cent for the night, 42 per cent from beyond the 3-point line. NU only went to the free throw line 4 times, converting just one attempt.
 
Seattle U (3-4) was led by Aaron Menzies’ 23 points and 14 rebounds with teammate Morgan Means adding 22 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. William Powell scored 17 points hitting 4 of 7 shots. SU out rebounded the Eagles 39-29. The Redhawks shot 45 per cent for the game and dropped in 16 of 21 free throws.
 
“I thought we gave a very good effort tonight,” said John Van Dyke, Eagle head coach, “and if we could have converted offensively a few more times, we might have come away with a win. All in all, it was a great experience for us and our guys were not in awe of being in a large arena like the Key. This will only help us down the road.”
 
Northwest U will return home to host Quest University from British Columbia on Saturday at 5 p.m.
