Unbeaten Puget Sound Defeats Evergreen
TACOMA - Puget Sound showed why it is unbeaten in women's basketball this season, rolling to a 73-45 victory over The Evergreen State College in a non-conference game played Wednesday night at Memorial Fieldhouse.
The Loggers (6-0) led by 13 points after one quarter and took their largest lead of the game at 60-25 early in the fourth quarter. The Geoducks (1-6) scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, nearly half of their total for the game.
Puget Sound never trailed, and in fact scored the first eight points to race away from the Geoducks in the opening minutes. The score at the end of the first quarter was 19-6, and by the half the hosts held a 33-13 margin.
The Geoducks shot 31 percent from the field (20-for-65), including 20 percent (3-for-15) from long range, and they went to the foul line just three times, hitting two of those.
Gabi Fenumiai shot 5-for-7 from the field in scoring 10 points, and she was matched for team-high scoring honors by Zaria Jones, who hit a pair of three-point baskets in getting her 10 points. Kylie Gorton snagged nine rebounds in 28 minutes off of the bench, and Corina Tacardon was credited with six assists.
Puget Sound shot 43 percent (29-for-68) overall and 87 percent (13-for-15) from the foul line. It also had a 46-36 rebounding advantage, with Jamie Lange grabbing a team-best seven in a reserve role. Lange also scored 12 points to support leading scorer Alexis Noren, who finished with 13. A total of 16 Loggers players saw action in the game.
Evergreen gets back to Cascade Collegiate Conference play this coming weekend when it hosts Multnomah on Friday and Warner Pacific on Saturday, with first tip in both games slated for 5:30 p.m.
