Eastern Oregon Pulls Away From Oregon Tech, 73-63
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech and Eastern Oregon University battled back-and-forth through the first half, but it was the Mountaineers who methodically pulled away in the third quarter for a 73-63 win in Cascade Collegiate Conference play today at Danny Miles Court.
EOU opened quickly doubling up Oregon Tech after connecting on four from long range, including a pair by Maloree Moss, leading 24-12 after the first quarter.
Megan Whetstone paced the Owls with five points in the opening stanza.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Ashleigh Vandenbrink and Nohea Waiwaiole, along with two free throws by Whetstone, drew the Owls to within four points, 24-20, with 6:56 remaining in the half. The margin stayed the same with Tech trailing 30-26 at the break.
A Karly LeVeque score to open the second half closed Tech’s deficit to 30-28, but EOU would pull away behind five treys in the third quarter, leading 58-41, heading into the final stanza.
EOU extended their lead by as many as 20 points early in the fourth quarter, 61-41.
Oregon Tech, however, would storm back, using an 11-0 run, including two triples from Waiwaiole and one by Whetstone closing to single digits 61-52.
The Owls managed to cut it to eight, 66-58, with 1:34 to play but never closer falling by the 73-63 final.
Megan Whetstone finished with a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds. Karly LeVeque netted 11 points to go with five rebounds and three assists with Nohea Waiwaiole adding 10 points in the loss for the Owls.
Maloree Moss led five Mountaineers in double figures with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Nikki Osborne and Madeline Laan recorded double-doubles with Osborne netting 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Laan chipped in 10 points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards. Payton Parrish and Jordan Klebaum added 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Oregon Tech will close out CCC action this weekend at Corban University and Northwest Christian University on February 19 and 20.
