Geoducks Fall to Knights Despite Fenumiai's 22 Points
Gabi Fenumiai tallied 22 points and seven rebounds Friday night but it wasn't enough to prevent the visiting Warner Pacific Knights from defeating The Evergreen State College, 68-57, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game at CRC Gymnasium.
The Knights (14-11 overall, 9-10 CCC) had four players in double-figure scoring, while Victoria Elleby scored 14 and Uriah Thomas 13 in support of Fenumiai for the Geoducks (5-19, 5-14).
Neither team shot the ball well in a low-scoring, back-and-forth first quarter that ended with the Geoducks holding an 8-7 advantage.
Warner Pacific ratcheted up the defensive full court pressure throughout the remainder of the game, and a total of 25 Evergreen turnovers leading to 19 Warner Pacific points turned out to be too much to overcome.
After leading 27-23 at the half, the Knight opened up their first double-digit lead at 47-37 on Daesha Jackson's free throw with 2:27 left in the third period. Evergreen whittled its deficit down to 50-46 on a pair of Fenumiai free throws, only to see Warner Pacific rattle off 12 of the next 14 points to take their largest advantage, 62-48, with 5:46 left on the clock.
Fenumiai was 9-for-13 from the field and 4-for-5 at the charity stripe in scoring her 22 points. Elleby had 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench, and Thomas added her 13 points and seven rebounds. Lacey Morris had four assists to lead the Geoducks.
Evergreen shot 45 percent for the game but was just 2-for-13 from beyond the three-point line. Rebounds favored the Geoducks, 34-33.
Micaela shot 5-for-6 off the bench to tie Kyeli Hendryx for team-high scoring honors with 11 points for the Knights. Lindsay Loe and Jackson both scored 10 for the visitors, and Loe led her team with six rebounds. Hendryx had four assists as Warner Pacific finished with 16 total assists on its 22 baskets.
The Knights shot 38 percent overall and just 3-for-19 from long range.
Evergreen closes its 2015-16 season at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against visiting Multnomah. Thomas, Elleby and injured guard Irene Moore will be honored followed the game on Senior Night.
