Raiders race into semifinals with 87-50 defeat of Coyotes 2/23/2016 9:01:00 PM SOU Sports Information ASHLAND – College of Idaho's attempt at taking the air out of the basketball successfully slowed down top-seeded Southern Oregon temporarily Tuesday night, but the Raider bench couldn't be stopped in the quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank. SOU's 87-50 victory over the eighth-seeded Coyotes at Mountain Avenue Gym got off to an ominous start: The teams were tied at 10 after the first quarter and went scoreless through the first five minutes of the game. Junior reserve Majerle Reeves finally broke the ice for the Raiders with a 3-pointer, and she went on to score a team-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from downtown. Freshman post Courtney Setzer added 16 more off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting as the Raider reserves outscored C of I's, 57-13. The Raiders (27-1 overall) – who moved up one spot to No. 5 in Tuesday's latest edition of the NAIA Div. II coaches' poll – advanced to host fourth-seeded Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The Beacons (19-11) rallied from 15 points down in their quarterfinal to defeat Corban, 68-56. C of I, which had lost nine days earlier at SOU by 44 points as the Raiders clinched the regular-season title, ended its season with a record of 9-18. The Coyotes had not led in either of their first two meetings with the Raiders and had only managed to keep the scores tied for a total of 38 seconds. They kept it close early Tuesday by regularly running down the shot clock – that and the fact that the teams combined to miss 15 shots and commit six turnovers before the first points were scored. The Raiders started the second quarter on a 13-2 run that included 3-pointers from Reeves, Demi Sahlinger and Tiani Bradford. Their lead expanded to 35-22 by halftime and put they put the game out of reach with an 11-1 spurt to start the third quarter. By the end of the night, the Raiders brought their shooting percentage up to 49 (35-of-71). They also went 10-for-23 from beyond the arc, giving them 22 made 3-pointers in their last two games. Carly Meister contributed nine points and six rebounds, Sahlinger had seven points and two assists, and Ashley Claussen went for six points, four assists and four rebounds. It was the first time all season that no Raider starters scored in double figures. With her first assist, however, Claussen became the first player in team history to record at least 1,000 points and 500 assists for her career. C of I was led by Jaycin Tini's 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Kiara Skinner added 10 points and two blocks, and Kellie Ross dished out five assists. The Raiders have gotten out of the first round each of the last four seasons. They also defeated the Coyotes in last year's quarterfinals. The Raiders also swept NCU in the regular-season series, but they were held to a season-low point total in last Friday's 55-42 win over the Beacons in Eugene.
