Second-quarter spurt sends Raiders past NCU, into title tilt with OIT 2/26/2016 8:53:00 PM SOU Sports Information ASHLAND – What started as a competitive game turned into just another exhibit of what has made the fifth-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team a will-breaking juggernaut Friday night in the semifinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank. The top-seeded Raiders led fourth-seeded Northwest Christian 13-12 when Carly Meister's put-back with 1:36 left in the first quarter started a 28-2 run that spanned the next 10 minutes, eventually becoming a 92-62 SOU victory at Mountain Avenue Gym. SOU point guard Ashley Claussen scored nine of her game-high 20 points during the spurt, which directed the Raiders to a 45-22 halftime lead. Meister finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Autumn Durand went for 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Courtney Setzer registered 10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals off the bench. The win set up the Raiders (28-1 overall) to face some old postseason demons: At 7 p.m. Monday, they'll host the championship game for the first time in eight years against second-seeded Oregon Tech, which knocked them out in the 2014 tournament title game and in the 2015 semifinals. The Owls (25-7) topped Eastern Oregon 51-43 in their semifinal contest by ending the game on an 18-2 run, thereby securing the CCC's second automatic berth in the national tournament. The Raiders, who average the second-most points in the nation (88.3), were held to a season-low point total in last Friday's 55-42 win at NCU but had no such problems this time around. They outscored the Beacons 16-0 in transition and – despite NCU's three post players at 6-foot-1 or taller and their eight blocks in the game – the Raiders maintained a 40-16 advantage in the paint. The game-deciding run mounted quickly: Tiani Bradford opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer on the first possession, Meister worked inside to score again 20 seconds later, and Ashley Claussen's second-chance jumper made it a 10-point game 74 seconds into the period. NCU's Chandler Gabrio then seemed to stop the bleeding with her own jumper, but the Raiders responded with 19 unanswered points. The Beacons missed 11 straight shots and committed five turnovers before their next basket, falling behind 41-14. Twenty-one of SOU's 32 baskets were assisted, and the Raiders had just 12 turnovers while shooting 43 percent from the field. Majerle Reeves added seven points off the bench as the Raider reserves totaled 35 points and all 13 players in uniform got on the board. The Beacons, who finished their season with a record of 19-12, were led by Sami Pitts' 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. They shot 30 percent as a team. SOU ran its record to 14-0 at home with its 12th straight win overall. OIT gave the Raiders their closest game at home, losing 71-64 on Feb. 9, but were swept in the season series. The win was SOU's 13th decided by 30 or more points.
