Corban Track & Field Sweeps Cross Town Rival Willamette in Dual Meet

SALEM, Ore. - Thanks to numerous event wins and career-best marks, the Corban University track & field teams defeated Willamette University in both the men's and women's team competitions on Thursday, winning comfortably on both sides. While blowing out the Bearcats on the men's side, 77-50, the Warrior women won 70-58 to earn Corban's first-ever sweep of Willamette.

RESULTS

In the Steeplechase, junior Craig Boekenoogen (Poulsbo, Wash.) shined for the Warrior men, winning comfortably by over 10 seconds with a time of 9:41.25.

In the sprints, sophomore Nathan Martin (Turner, Ore.) showed that he is ready to compete for the 200 Meters Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Title in 2016 after taking third in 2015 at the CCC Championships, clocking a solid early-season time of 22.15 seconds.

Double the distance - same result. Junior Amadi Amaitsa (Keizer, Ore.) crossed the finish line in first place in the 400 Meters with a time of 51.59 seconds.

In the 110 Hurdles, Martin registered a winning time of 15.17, finishing ahead of freshman teammate Michael Stevens (Grangeville, Idaho) who took second with a mark of 15.69 seconds. Stevens also competed in the 400 Hurdles, winning with a mark of 1:00.91.

In the High Jump, sophomore decathlete Jason Bracken (Battle Ground, Wash.) shined, clearing a career-best mark of 6' 4" to win the event, finishing ahead of freshman teammate Asa Flanagan (Scappoose, Ore.) who cleared 6' in second place. Flanagan also performed well in the Long Jump, registering another second-place mark with a distance of 20' 11.75". Junior teammate Timothy Yee (Calexico, Calif.) placed third in the event with a distance of 20' 8".

Senior Dane Walker (Anchorage, Alaska) won the Hammer Throw with a mark of 133' 10.25", while taking second in both the Discus (140' 1.25") and the Shot Put (45' 3.5").

Finally, Bracken and Flanagan continued to show their versatility, as Bracken won the Javelin with a distance of 164' 11.5", while Flanagan was not far behind with a mark of 160' 2.75".

On the women's side, senior Chelsea Petersen (Sisters, Ore.) dominated in the Hurdle events, winning the 100 Hurdles comfortably with a time of 15.44 seconds, while crossing the finish line in a mark of 1:06.49 in the 400 Hurdles to win by nearly four seconds.

In the Javelin, while building on her NAIA 'A' qualifying mark from last week, junior Kelly Cruise (Salem, Ore.) won the event on Thursday with another solid mark of 127' 10.25". Continuing Corban's dominance in the throwing events, junior Crystal Lynch (Sunnyvale, Calif.) won the Shot Put (39' 1.5") and the Discus (120' 0.5"). In the Hammer Throw, senior Kelsey Wright (Beaverton, Ore.) finished in second place with a distance of 128' 1".

In the High Jump, senior Sarah Taylor (Bend, Ore.) won the event, clearing a height of 5' 0.25". In the long jump, sophomore Adrianna Curteman (Albany, Ore.) won with a distance of 16' 2.5", just edging out freshman teammate Lexi McQueary (Kennewick, Wash.) who recorded a mark of 16' 1.75".

Additionally, freshman Kristi Childers (Milton-Freewater, Ore.) notched a pair of second-place finishes on the day, going runner-up in the 200 Meters (26.80 seconds) and in the 100 Hurdles (16.30 seconds).

"It was a great all around day and several PR's were accomplished on both the men's and women's sides," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "Our jumps, throws, sprints, hurdles, and everything really went well. Nathan Martin ran one of the leading times for the conference in the 200 Meters while Chelsea Petersen ran a great early-season time in the 400 Hurdles. In addition, Dane Walker looked very strong in both the Shot Put and the Discus, while both Jason Bracken and Sarah Taylor were fantastic in the High Jump to win the event."

Corban returns to action on Monday and Tuesday next week, competing in the Pacific Combined Events in Forest Grove all day.
