Evergreen Volleyball Adds Seven Top Recruits

The Evergreen State College volleyball head coach Angela Spoja announces the signing of seven athletes to the 2016 recruiting class.

Freshmen Megan Breckenridge, Renita Gray, Chloee Hunt, McKensie Mickler, Bethanie Nelson, and Mya Voeller, along with sophomore transfer Greta Varvell, will join seven strong returners for the Fall 2016 season.

"We are very excited for this recruiting class to round out our roster for 2016," says Spoja, who begins her fourth season at Evergreen this coming fall. "We have some all-around athletes and great people to complement our existing team. This is the strongest freshman class Evergreen Volleyball has ever seen."

Megan Breckenridge (Sequim HS) is a 5-10 libero from Sequim, Wash.  A two-year varsity starter, Megan was Offensive MVP and Olympic League 2A First Team as a senior. She helped lead her team to the state tournament as a senior. "Meagan's strength is her defense and serve receive, and her work ethic and determination to succeed will be a positive attribute to the team the next four seasons," Spoja says. She plays club for Olympic Premier Volleyball Club.

Renita Gray (Garfield HS) is a 6-1 middle/opposite from Seattle, Wash. Renita helped Garfield HS to an undefeated league record and the Metro League title.  As a senior, she was a five-time Max Preps Player of the Match, in addition to earning Metro League First Team honors. "Renita will provide depth for the Geoducks in the middle and will continue to mature and improve during her time at Evergreen," Spoja says. She plays club for Absolute Zero Volleyball Club.

Chloee Hunt (Astoria HS) is a 6-1 outside hitter from Astoria, Ore.  A three-sport athlete, Chloee was a four-year starter in volleyball and basketball and also participated in golf for three years.  She earned all-conference honorable mention as a freshman, and was first team all-conference the following three years in both volleyball and basketball, as well as team MVP her junior and senior years.  Chloee was also honorable mention all-conference in golf as a freshman and first team as a sophomore and junior.  "Chloee has the potential to make an immediate impact on the team and in the Cascade Conference," Spoja says. "Not only is she a force offensively, her defense and serve receive is solid and makes her a high level six-rotation player."  Chloee plays club for Cowlitz County Volleyball Club.

McKensie Mickler (Catlin Gabel HS) is a 6-1 outside hitter/middle from Lakewood, Wash.  Originally is from Portland, Ore., McKensie enjoyed a very successful prep career at Catlin Gabel, from which she graduated in 2011. A four-year varsity starter and two-time team captain, she earned second team all-league honors as a sophomore, and first team as a junior and senior, in addition to being selected conference player of the year as a senior.  A team MVP for three years, a two-time Oregonian Player of the Week, and a two-time AVCA Oregon State Player of the Week, McKensie ranked second in the state of Oregon in kills her senior year (4.7 kills per game).  "McKensie has a high volleyball IQ, provides strong leadership to the team, and is a fantastic addition to the program," Spoja says.

Bethanie Nelson (Chaiwana HS) is a 6-1 middle from Pasco, Wash.  Bethanie earned Mid-Columbia Conference First Team honors as a senior, and was named the team's Most Inspirational her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.  Bethanie helped her team win the conference title her sophomore year. "Bethanie is a strong, athletic middle that will be a force next year at the net for the Geoducks," Spoja says.  She plays club for Columbia Juniors Volleyball Club.

Greta Varvell (Saint Peter's University) is a 5-10 outside hitter from San Jose, Calif. Greta was a four-year varsity starter in at Branham High School and a starting middle her freshman year at NCAA Division 1-AAA Saint Peter's University, located in Jersey City, N.J.  At Branham High School, Greta was team captain, first team all-league and league MVP as a senior. During her one season at Saint Peter's, Greta averaged 1.4 kills, 2.5 digs and 0.6 blocks per set. "Greta is a strong, dominant outside hitter and a quality defender with a competitive fire and spirit that will serve as a spark plug for the team next fall," Spoja says.

Mya Voeller (Mt. Spokane HS) is a 5-10 setter/defensive specialist from Colbert, Wash.  A two-sport athlete at Mt. Spokane HS (volleyball and softball), she was a two-year varsity starter in volleyball, and her team qualified for state her senior season.  Mya received the Wildcat Award her senior year, which represents hard work, selflessness, and sincerity. "The coaching staff knows Mya will continue to exude these attributes when she arrives at Evergreen," Spoja says. "Mya knows the court very well and is not only a quality setter but a strong defender as well.  She plays club for Apex Volleyball Club.
