TUCSON, Ariz. – The NU Eagles continued play on day four of tournament play at the Tucson Invitational and came away with a split in their two games. The Eagles defeated a good Dordt College (Iowa) team, 7-1 and then lost a close, 5-2, extra inning game to Olivet Nazarene (Illinois) in their second game.

Game 1 – Eagles 7, Dordt 1

Hannah Yelas threw a nifty 4-hitter and Allie Anderegg came through with two RBIs as the Eagles defeated the Defenders 7-1 at Lincoln Park. NU came up with 10 hits and played errorless ball for seven innings.

The Eagles scored early in the first inning when Alyssa Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch from third base to give NU a 1-0 lead. Dordt tied the game in the third inning getting a run on a ground out to first base.

Northwest U came up with back-to-back big innings in the 4th and 5th scoring 3 runs in each inning. Darian Godfrey and Danielle Bonsky led off the 4th inning with consecutive base hits. Mikayla Wells laid down a bunt and Godfrey scored on a throw error by Dordt. Allie Anderegg then came through with a two out double to right field scoring Aubrey Slocum and Mikayla Wells.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Savannah Rush singled to right field. After a Dordt pitching change, and a walk issued to Courtney Cox, Darian Godfrey singled loading the bases. Janey Ganta, pinch running for Rush, scored on another Defender error. Cara Cristion hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Cox. Alyssa Gonzalez then singled to right center driving in Godfrey from third, giving NU a 7-1 lead. Hannah Yelas and the NU defense would hold Dordt scoreless for four straight innings to earn the victory.

Northwest U (3-4) was led by Allie Anderegg who went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Danielle Bonsky was 1 for 3 and also knocked in 2 RBIs. Savannah Rush was 2 for 3. Yelas struck out 4 batters and did not give up a base on balls in the 7 innings.

Game 2 – Olivet Nazarene 5, Northwest U 2 (8 innings)

After battling to a 2-2 tie after 7 innings, Olivet Nazarene came up with 3 runs in the top of the 8th inning for a 5-2 victory.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning after Alyssa Gonzalez led off with a single to right and Allie Anderegg followed her with a double to left field. Gonzalez scored when Cara Cristion grounded into a double play.

Olivet took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning scoring one run on an infield single and Emily Carstens scored when Ashley McKnight hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Anderegg continued her hot hitting with a lead-off double to center field. Cara Cristion moved Anderegg to third on a ground out to third base and Anderegg scored on Savannah Rush’s sacrifice fly to center field.

The game then remained scoreless until the 8th inning when Olivet came up with three runs for win. By tourney rule, the Tigers put a runner at second to start their inning. After a ground out, Emily Carstens singled in a run. After Carsten moved to second, Morgan Winkler came through with a double, scoring Carstens. Olivet got another double scoring Winkler and that would be all the Tigers would need for the win as the Eagles would go down 1,2,3 in the bottom of the 8th.

Allie Anderegg led Northwest U (3-5) again with a 2 for 3 day from the plate, scoring run. Alyssa Gonzalez went 2 for 4 and scored a run and Daniele Bonsky was 1 for 3. Kelli Peckham took the loss after 8 good innings in the circle with 3 strikeouts and issuing only one walk.

“Our energy was the best it’s been during our trip,” commented Montessa Califano, NU head coach. “We focused on a couple of adjustments from yesterday to today and the ladies did a good job making those adjustments. We just couldn’t move our runners as well as we would have liked.”

The Eagles finish tournament play tomorrow with a late afternoon game with Ashford University of Clinton, Iowa at 4 pm, MST and then play their finale at 6:30 pm, MST, with Cardinal Stritch from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
