DALLAS, Texas – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Wednesday that two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Sports Information Directors had been selected as recipients of the 2016 CoSIDA Convention grants. Northwest Christian University’s Nick Askew, and Corban University’s Danny Day are two of the 20 recipients from around the country selected to receive the grant.
Following an application process and selection period in which any member of CoSIDA from around the country could apply for the grant, both Askew and Day were chosen as grant recipients, affording them the opportunity to attend the 2016 CoSIDA Convention in Dallas, Texas. As grant recipients, both receive a stipend to help cover their costs of travel and lodging at this year’s event which is set to take place June 12-15.
With the CCC garnering two recipients in 2016, it marks the third-straight year the CCC has earned the grant, as College of Idaho's Mike Safford earned the grant last year, and Evergreen's Chris Thompson earned the grant the year before.
Askew, who has been a Sports Information Director for 16 total years, is now in his 10th year at NCU. While originally graduating from Biola University in 2000 with a degree in Christian Education and then beginning as the SID at Concordia University Irvine, he’s helped take NCU to the next level during his time in Eugene. While recently redesigning NCU’s GoBeacons.com, he’s always been keen on keeping all of the Beacon faithful up to date via stats, social media, recaps, and feature stories. In addition, Askew and NCU’s staff hosted the CCC Men’s and Women’s Soccer Tournaments in Eugene this past fall, putting on a phenomenal event that will be remembered by many.
“Nick is a one man SID show,” said NCU Director of Athletics Corey Anderson. “From keeping stats and writing game recaps, to being heavily involved in marketing and social media --- Nick keeps NCU Athletics ‘out front’ for our fans, families, and student body. Nick has been the SID at NCU for 10 years, and he was the first hire that I made when NCU decided to make the leap into the NAIA.”
Day began at Corban in June of 2014, and since his start in Salem with the Warriors has led the charge in helping to create a great student-athlete experience for all Corban Warriors. In his first year at Corban, Day spearheaded the redesign of CorbanWarriors.com, and in June of 2015, the NAIA Publications and Media Contest Awards recognized the website as the No. 4 athletic website in the NAIA. While increasing the awareness of Warrior Athletics through social media, stats, video content, and varying feature stories, he has helped keep the Warrior faithful abreast as to what is going on with their favorite teams and players. Prior to Corban, Day served as the Sports Information Graduate Assistant at the University of Redlands for two years after four years as an undergraduate assistant with the Bulldogs.
“The recognition and grant by CoSIDA is very well deserved,” said Corban University Director of Athletics Greg Eide. “Danny has taken our Sports Information department to unparalleled heights and national prominence, and we are very grateful having someone so talented at Corban.”
