VANCOUVER, B.C. – The University of British Columbia is set to host the 2016 NAIA West Grouping Championship, presented by U.S. Bank, beginning today at Thunderbird Park.
The three day, five-team, double elimination tournament starts at 10 a.m. both today and Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
Lewis-Clark State College finished as the North Division regular season champion after going 45-7 overall, 30-5 in conference play, and will be the number one-seed in the tournament. Lewis-Clark State led the regular season in batting average (.309), runs scored (437) and RBIs (396).
Second-seeded British Columbia earned the lowest ERA during the season at 2.38. Pitcher Alex Webb finished with a season high of 111 strikeouts for the Thunderbirds while tying for the most wins at nine.
Finishing off the North Division representatives are College of Idaho (35-18, 22-13 West) as the third-seed and Corban (24-25, 19-16 West) as the fourth-seed.
After going 15-22-1 overall and 11-7 in the Cal-Pac Conference, Marymount claimed the fifth-seed and will represent the South Division in the West Grouping tournament.
British Columbia has earned the conference’s first automatic qualifier as the tournament host while LCSC has an automatic bid as the NAIA World Series host site. The second automatic qualifier will be given to the tournament champion. If LCSC or UBC claims the tournament title, the second automatic qualifier will be given to the next highest finisher in the tournament.
