REDDING, Calif. – Winning the first game of the year wasn't a good enough start to the season for the Multnomah University men's soccer team as they continued their winning ways, defeating Simpson University 2-1 on the road on Thursday afternoon.
How it Happened: On a day with temperatures reaching over 100-degrees, MU freshman
Noe Favila found a way to sneak by the Simpson defense, scoring in the 16
th minute of play, thanks to an assist by
Michael Kochis.
With time closing in the first half, the Red Hawks found a way to even the score after their seventh shot of the half, this time by Jacob Muniz, found the back of the net with 4:25 reaming.
Simpson out-shot the Lions in the second period 13-10, forcing MU keeper
Manny Guillermo to make some big plays, totaling seven saves in the second half compared to only one in the opening period.
With just under five minutes to play in the game, a through ball from
Liberty Lillibridge set up
Fischer Rogers for his first goal as a Lion, knocking the ball just passed the post from five yards out.
From the Coach: "I was really proud of the guys today, it is always tough to play on the road and then to have to play in 104 degree temperatures," said head coach
Tom Stephens. "We played great from the opening whistle creating a number of really good chances. We finally wore them down in the second and Fish [Rogers] buried it with five to go. We get better and better every day.
Coming up Next: The Lions will continue their road trip as they head to Incline Village, Nev., for a match with Sierra Nevada College.
