NEWBERG, Ore. – The EOU women’s soccer team yielded a goal in the winding moments of the first half, and the Blue and Gold ultimately dropped a 1-0 decision to NCAA Division III opponent George Fox in its season opener on Saturday night.
In the 45th minute of the first half, the Bruins took advantage of a corner kick opportunity, sailing a kick into the box and scoring off the crossbar from close range to take a 1-0 advantage into the break. Both teams earned five corner-kick opportunities.
EOU sought the equalizer in the second stanza, unleashing eight shots, including two in the final 10 minutes, but to no avail.
As a team, the Mountaineers (0-1) unleashed 22 total shots, including eight on goal. Newcomers Natalie Mitchell and Veronica Sullivan both posted three shots apiece (one on goal), while sophomore forward Alexandria Cuaresma got two good looks on goal.
In goal, senior Jessica Parker yielded one goal in 45 minutes of action, while freshman keeper Sonia Nichols gathered two saves in 24:09 minutes. Cyndi Cottrell, a freshman out of Pasco, Wash., earned 20:51 minutes for EOU.
The meeting served as a scrimmage for George Fox, which can’t participate in a counter until September per NCAA rules.
