SALEM, Ore. – Coming from behind not just once, but twice on Saturday afternoon, the Corban University women's soccer team showed its resiliency with a 3-2 victory over Northwestern College (Iowa). In the triumph, Corban scored all three goals in the second-half comeback.
"It was great for the team to bounce back after a frustrating first half," said Corban head coach Likius Hafeni. "The team showed character and we managed to play our game in the second half. We are looking forward to our game tomorrow!"
In the first stanza, an unlucky giveaway in the back put Jahdai Dunk in on goal for the Red Raiders, and she made no mistake in the 13th minute, scoring to put Northwestern up 1-0.
The score remained that way for the rest of the half, despite Corban out-shooting Northwestern, 9-2, in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, senior midfielder Emily Larick played a beautiful through ball behind the Red Raiders' defense and into the on-running path of senior forward Randi Donahue. Donahue slotted her shot home to tie the contest at 1-1.
Just a few minutes later, however, the Warriors committed a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty-kick for the Red Raiders (2-3), which was converted by Alissa Christoffer.
Two minutes later though, Warrior freshman forward Annouscka Kordom beat two defenders down the right side and whipped in a cross to the back post, finding sophomore forward Lexi McQueary who buried her shot into the back of the net to tie the match at 2-2.
Then in the 77th minute, junior Macy Goodwin stepped up to the spot after Donahue had earned a penalty kick, and Goodwin, with ice running through her veins, fired home her shot to put Corban up 3-2. The goal was the first of her Warrior career and turned out to be the game-winner.
After the match, Goodwin talked about the big win:
Corban (3-3) dominated on the afternoon, totaling 23 shots to just three for the Red Raiders, forcing Northwestern's Madison Fordyce to make nine saves.
The Warriors return to action on Sunday when they travel to McMinnville for their final non-conference match of the 2016 campaign, set to be played against Linfield College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
