Southern Oregon Men's Soccer Named Team of the Week
LA GRANDE, Ore. – With decisive 2-0 and 4-0 victories over in-state rivals George Fox and Linfield, Southern Oregon University’s men’s soccer team has been named the “Team of the Week” for September 5-11, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
The games were the first home contests of the 2016 campaign for the Raiders.
On Wednesday, SOU rolled past the Bruins of George Fox, 2-0, behind the scoring of Paul Matyas and Carlos Magana. The Raiders controlled the action with a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half, 8-2 in the second, and three corner kicks to the Bruins' nil. The Raiders put nine of their shots on goal, while SOU keeper Jonathan Morales needed only to make two saves for the shutout.
On Saturday, Southern kept the party rolling defeating visiting Linfield, 4-0. The Raiders made all of their noise in the first half. Daniel Zamores scored the first two goals in the eighth and 32nd minutes, Mitchell Pinney tallied his first goal as a Raider in the 33rd, and Kelly Gieber finished off the assault with a liner into the net in the 39th for his first at SOU.
Southern Oregon (2-1, 0-0 CCC) will look to make it three or even four-straight when they open Cascade Conference play at Walla Walla (Sept. 16, 11 a.m.) and at Multnomah (Sept. 17, 4 p.m.).
