Another Double Overtime Tie for the Geoducks
OLYMPIA – For the second straight day, The Evergreen State College battled a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer opponent to a 1-1 double overtime draw.
One day after going 110 thrilling minutes in a 1-1 tie with Eastern Oregon, the Geoducks (1-0-2 overall, 0-0-2 CCC) had the same outcome against the visiting Warner Pacific Knights (1-3-1, 0-1-1) at Geoduck Pitch.
The Knights put the Geoducks on the back foot in the early going, taking the first six shots and getting the game's first score before the hosts finally found their gear.
Kingsley Amrah put Warner Pacific on the board at 11:07 with a nice individual effort. He dribbled past several defenders, found himself one-on-one against Evergreen keeper Thomas Clark, and shot to the right side to beat Clark from about 12 yards out.
Evergreen got the goal back late in the first half when substitutes Charlie Kramer and Josiah Pacheco combined on a nice move. Pacheco got the ball down the right wing, cut back inside and crossed the ball into the middle of the box. Kramer, making a run from the left side, dove and headed the ball into the goal. The tally is Kramer's second of the season, tying him with Jordan Zimmerman for the team lead.
The second half played evenly with both teams getting six shots. A highlight came when Evergreen keeper Thomas Clark went full stretch to palm a goal-bound shot wide of the post. The two overtimes were much like the second half as Warner Pacific and Evergreen both had four combined attempts in those periods.
Evergreen came close to scoring the winning goal on several occasions in extra time. The first came about halfway through the first overtime when Issa Hassan got in behind the Warner Pacific defense, only to see Warner goalie Erdal Barkay parry the ball around the right post. Barkay was also up to the task in the final seconds of the initial overtime, stopping Sasa Yodkerepauprai's free kick from just outside the top of the box.
Early in the second overtime, Warner Pacific's Johannes Reiber hit high over the bar on a free kick, and a couple of minutes later Evergreen's Christian Segovia beat Barkay to a through ball, only to push the ball wide of the right post as the two players slid into one another.
Finally, with about 2:30 left, Clark used his body to stop a close-range effort from Warner Pacific's Julian Hassel.
Clark ended up with five saves and Barkay had six. Corner kicks favored Evergreen by a significant 9-3 margin, but shots were nearly equal with the Geoducks getting 20 and the Knights 19.
Evergreen returns to action at 3 p.m. next Saturday when it plays conference co-leader Northwest University in Kirkland
