Third Quarter Decisive as Evergreen Falls
Northwest outscored The Evergreen State College by 17 points in the third quarter to pull away for a 66-44 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball win in a game played Tuesday night inside Costantino Recreation Center.
Hannah Carlson tallied 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Eagles (9-11 overall, 4-6 CCC) to the win, which ended a six-game losing streak.
The Eagles broke the game open in the third quarter with four three-pointers in seven attempts, leading to a 26-9 scoring advantage for the visitors.
The Geoducks (3-14, 2-8) got 14 points and eight assists from Zaria Jones, 12 points and 10 rebounds from Gabi Fenumiai and eight points and 12 rebounds from Autumn Moorcroft.
Evergreen opened the scoring on a layup by Fenumiai, and after Northwest had taken a 13-9 lead at the quarter break, regained a 20-18 lead on a basket by Jones at the midway point of the second quarter.
After losing its first quarter lead, the Eagles rebounded to go ahead 31-23 at the half, and that led to the decisive third quarter surge by the Eagles.
Evergreen struggled shooting the ball throughout the game, hitting just 15-for-60 for 25 percent compared to 26-for-62, or 41 percent, for the Eagles. In addition, Northwest was 6-for-14 from three-point range compared to 4-for-17 for Evergreen.
For Northwest, 10 of the 13 players to see action ended up in the scoring column with Carlson the only one to reach double figures. Mariah Stacona scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists and Miranda Langenhorst finished with four assists.
Both teams play at Walla Walla University this weekend, Northwest facing the Wolves on Saturday night and the Geoducks doing the honors on Sunday afternoon.
