No. 12 Corban Finds Offense, Beats Evergreen
Corban University rolled into Costantino Recreation Center on Friday night with the No. 12 ranking in NAIA volleyball and they will not lose ground after sweeping aside The Evergreen State College, 25-20, 25-15, 25-13, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match.
The Geoducks (6-13 overall, 3-9 CCC) played on even terms with the Warriors (17-6, 12-2) for the majority of the first set, but once the visitors built momentum late in that set they were too much for the home team to stop.
The first set was tightly contested with nine ties and two lead changes. With the score tied 11-11, the Warriors ran off four straight points on three Amber Parker kills and a double block by Parker and Alaina Gentili. Evergreen pulled within two points at 15-13 on consecutive kills by Chloee Hunt and Matalasi Laban, but that was as close as it got the rest of the way.
Parker had six of her team-high 13 kills in that set, and the Warriors soon found their rhythm on offense. After hitting .120 in the first set, they hit .424 in the second and .500 in the third. Marandah Boeder had a total of 10 kills and no errors on 15 attempts in the last two sets, and Parker added seven kills and no errors on 19 swings as Corban closed out the win.
Evergreen hit .121 as a team, led by Natalie Taylor with 14 kills and a .290 attack percentage. Matalasi Laban had 27 assists and Megan Breckenridge topped her team with 16 kills.
The Warriors ended up hitting .306 as a team, slightly better than their conference-leading attack percentage. Boeder finished the match with 11 kills and no errors on 23 attempts, a .478 attack percentage, while Parker came in at .314.
The two-setter duo of Madison Milligan and Cierra Leopoldino combined for 39 assists and Haley Wells was tough on the back row with 24 digs.
The Geoducks are back in action at 7 p.m. tomorrow when they host Northwest Christian University.
