PORTLAND, Ore. – For the third time this season, Multnomah University dropped a 1-0 game on a penalty kick as the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers scored the only goal of the match in the first half for a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer win Friday afternoon here at Delta Park.

A Multnomah foul barely inside the right side of the box in the 22nd minute set up Jorge Chavez for the penalty try, and he sent the winning shot inside the right post to pin the loss on Lions' rookie keeper JohnMark Townsend, who was making his first start of the season.  Townsend did make three saves in his 22 minutes of work before Manuel Guillermo-Olivares finished up and made four more saves to keep the Lions close.

EOU goalie Alex Mitchell earned the shutout with three saves, including a stop of Hunter VanCleave's liner from 10 yards out off a corner kick with just under a minute to play, snuffing out Multnomah's last best hope to even the score.  Multnomah had five shots in the game, three on goal, while Eastern Oregon took 20 shots in all, eight on target.

Nicolas Mboungou had two shots to lead the Lions on offense.  Carlos Peregrina and Julian Wells had four shots each for the Mountaineers, with Peregrina on goal on three of his attempts.

Multnomah also lost 1-0 games on penalty scores at home vs. Linfield and on the road at the College of Idaho earlier this fall.  The Lions are now 2-11 overall and 0-9 in the CCC, while Mountaineers climb to 6-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference.

--- Notes: The Lions honored their three graduating seniors in pre-game ceremonies: Kevin Carroll, Robert Kochis, and Zach Barker.  Carroll did not play this season due to injuries.  Barker was inserted into the starting lineup despite an injury that has kept him out of the past several games and took the opening kick, drilling it out of bounds so that a substitute could come in for him … "We decided to make today our Senior Day," said head coach Tom Stephens, "even though we have one more home game, because everyone's parents had already made plans to come down for this weekend before our last home game, which was supposed to be tomorrow, was moved to Tuesday." … The switch was caused by the postponement of a match between Warner Pacific College and Eastern Oregon due to smoke from the Eagle Creek fire and subsequent rescheduling to Oct. 14, necessitating the move of the Multnomah-Warner Pacific match to Oct. 17.

--- Next: Multnomah hosts Warner Pacific Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in a conference match to close out its home season … Eastern Oregon is at Warner Pacific Saturday for a late-night CCC contest starting at 9:45 p.m.
