Luckless Geoducks Lose on Deflected Goal
Rachel Henley's first goal of the season proved to be the match winner Saturday afternoon as the visiting Southern Oregon Raiders knocked off The Evergreen State College, 1-0, in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer action at Geoduck Pitch.
Henley was in the right spot, coming onto a free ball about 12 yards from goal. Her shot deflected off another player and over the head of Evergreen goalkeeper Emily Sorenson and into the goal to give the Raiders (8-6-0 overall, 5-3-0 CCC) the win.
If the host Geoducks (0-9-2, 0-6-1) didn't have bad luck, they would have no luck at all. They scrapped against the Raiders, playing resilient defense and mustering some effective offense, particularly late in the match, but still came up short.
After Southern Oregon had the run of play in the opening 45 minutes with an 8-1 advantage in shot, the Geoducks enjoyed an 8-5 edge through the final half. As it turned out, however, Southern Oregon keeper Hannah Ceciliani finished with three saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season.
Haleigh Ryneski, Madison Early and Hunter Thomson Terrel all had three shot attempts for the Geoducks, with Thomson Terrel putting two of her on target.
Of Southern Oregon's 13 total shots only three were on frame, and Sorenson stopped two of those. Unfortunately for the Geoducks, Henley's deflected shot left Sorenson no chance and the Raiders had the victory.
Evergreen heads to Montana for its next two matches, playing Providence on Friday and Carroll on Saturday.
