KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University outscored the University of the Fraser Valley, 46-25, in the second half on their way to a 95-64, non-league win tonight.
The Eagles would get off to a fast start for the second straight night in the Aldercrest Auto Rebuild Classic as they would take a 19-9 lead after Jasdeep Singh hit a jumper with 12:21 left in the first half. NU would gradually increase their lead to 16 points, 44-28 after Kaelan Hicks scored on his driving lay-up. But, the Cascades from north of the border would battle back with an 11-4 run at the end of the half to cut the lead to 49-39 as the buzzer would sound.
Four missed shots and four turnovers would mark the start of the second half for Fraser Valley as the Eagles would increase their lead to 60-39 after basket by Justice Martion. UFV would continue to go cold from the field, but NU would continue with the hot hand and with Kaelan Hicks stretching the Eagles’ lead to 28, 80-52 after his two free throws. Chris Hakilimali’s jumper with 1:32 to go would give NU their largest lead at 95-62 as they would go on to post their second win of the young season.
6-8 junior, Alex Smith went 4 for 7 from the 3-point line for Northwest U (2-0) on his way to a team high 20 points while Justice Martion added 17 points and 8 rebounds. Tanner Davis and Kaelan Hicks added 13 each for the Eagles (2-0) who shot 49%.
Daniel Adediran led the Cascades with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Sukhman Sandhu added 11 points. UFV shot 32 per cent from the 3-point line in the first half and cooled to just 10% (1-10) in the second. The game was an exhibition for UFV.
"I'm encouraged by how hard our guys are playing," said NU coach, Jeff Drinkwine. "We forced 17 turnovers with effort and hard work and this is laying a good foundation for the team. Offensively, we've shot nearly 50 per cent both nights which means our shot selection has been good and we're moving the ball."
