No. 11 EOU Volleyball Cruises to Sweep of Evergreen

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Shaking off a tough loss the night prior, the No. 11 Eastern Oregon volleyball team made quick work of its Saturday opponent, sweeping the Evergreen State College (25-9, 25-18, 25-18) in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
 
The Mountaineers (19-6, 13-3 CCC) dominated the opening set with a 25-9 victory, hitting .400 from the floor while holding the Geoducks (7-16 4-11 CCC) to -.192 hitting. EOU’s longest run of the match came in the first set, turning a 5-2 lead into a 14-2 lead with nine-straight points.
 
The Blue and Gold got off to fast starts in sets two and three and had leads of eight or more in each set before letting Evergreen close the gaps late. Ultimately, the Mountaineers were able to claim both sets 25-18.
 
Senior middle hitter Emily Nay had one of her best hitting nights of the season, finishing with seven kills and no errors for a .636 hitting percentage. She also added four block assists.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Megan Bunn paced the team with nine kills hitting .364 from the floor. Senior middle hitter Madisen Garlie led the Mountaineers with five block assists, adding eight kills. Senior right-side hitter Isabelle Statkus had seven kills to just one error, adding three block assists.
 
Freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey finished with 18 digs to tie for the match high. Senior Malia Mills added 10 digs and posted three kills.
 
The freshman setter duo of Madison Pilon and Abby Smith accounted for 29 assists. Pilon had 15 and five digs, while Smith posted 14 assists and eight digs.
 
For the Geoducks, Natalie Taylor led all players with 14 kills. Alexis Garrison finished with 21 assist to also pace all players, while Cheyenne Baird had 18 digs.
 
The victory put EOU back into a tie for first place in the conference with No. 15 Corban, each holding 13-3 records with just four matches to go. The Mountaineers and Warriors face each other next in Salem, Oregon on Oct. 27.
 
EOU’s final four matches of the regular include bouts with Corban, Northwest Christian (10-6) and No. 13-ranked College of Idaho.
