Geoducks Come Up Short Against Rocky
Hannah Borgel scored a goal in each half as visiting Rocky Mountain defeated The Evergreen State College, 2-0, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer contest played Friday afternoon at Capital High School.
With just 11 players available because of numerous injuries, Evergreen (0-12-2, 0-9-1) kept the visitors off of the scoreboard until the closing seconds of the first half when Borgel ran onto a ball in behind the Geoducks defense. After several dribbles, she found the far side of the net at 44:21, putting the visitors on top 1-0.
Borgel made it 2-0 at 62:28 with a 25-yard rocket just under the crossbar, the assist going to Lauryn Gamache. Rocky had several other good scoring opportunities, including Tiara Duford's first-time shot that rattled the cross bar late in the second half.
The Geoducks took seven total shots, with Haleigh Ryneski and Ana Vigil each getting one on frame. Evergreen goalkeeper Emily Sorenson, meanwhile, finished with six saves.
With the victory, the Bears (12-3-0 overall, 8-2-0 CCC, 24 points) stayed within one point of conference-leading Eastern Oregon with one match remaining for both teams. Rocky Mountain closes its regular season at Northwest University on Saturday afternoon, while Eastern Oregon hosts third-place Corban.
Evergreen closes out its 2017 season at noon tomorrow when the College of Idaho visits the Capital High School Field. Ryneski, the team's only senior, will be honored prior to the start of the game.
